Future of Democracy Series: The Emergence of Populism in Democracies

Description

Over the past twenty years, there has been a rise of populist parties on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. Far-right parties in particular have often been electorally successful and continue to reshape the political landscape in Europe and, more recently, in the United States.

This fourth event in the Future of Democracy Series will explore the defining characteristics of populist parties and features a presentation by Bart Bonikowski from New York University called "Nationalism and the Rise of Radical‑Right Politics in the United States and Europe".

Participants will gain an understanding about why this shift to populist alternatives is gaining momentum and what this changing political landscape means for democratic norms and institutions.
