Linguistic Duality Day

On the second Thursday in September, we celebrate our rich heritage as citizens of a bilingual country. Canada’s two official languages are a fundamental element of our public service.

To celebrate the 8th anniversary of Linguistic Duality Day, federal public servants are invited to participate in two virtual workshops on September 8, 2016, via WebEx. These sessions have been organized by an interdepartmental Atlantic team from the Canada School of Public Service, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages.

Service to Citizens: The Active and Inclusive Offer!

Are you an employee who provides services to Canadians or a manager in a designated bilingual federal office? Don’t miss this interactive session that goes beyond the usual reminders about your obligations and explores the more human aspects of active offers. This new method will demystify some of the assumptions of active offers that you might have and will help you to understand the impact of little phrases such as “Hello! Bonjour!” can have on official language minority communities.

Termium Plus®: A Discovery Tool

This learning session will explore the features and functionalities of TERMIUM Plus®, the Government of Canada's terminology and linguistic data bank. With TERMIUM Plus®, you can find the equivalent of acronyms, initials or abbreviations in either official language. It can also be leveraged to find an expression using keywords, improve the clarity and effectiveness of your communications, or simply save time.

In addition, TERMIUM Plus® has grown to more than four million terms in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese and contains an interesting selection of writing tools to help you with any questions you might have about usage and style.
